Printable Handouts You can use in Class

  1. delicious at a Glance (Printable PDF you can take to class)
  2. http://delicious.com/thurs3/thurs3.delicious (delicious bookmarks from thurs@3)

General Information about Delicious (formally del.icio.us)

  1. Read the description of social bookmarking at delicious (http://delicious/about)
  2. Read the next section on how to get started. (http://delicious.com/help/getStarted)
  3. Set up an account at delicious. Be sure to add the buttons to your browser!
    • Once you've set up an account, and you have the buttons on your browser, you don't even need to bookmark your del.icio.us account - just click the checkered flag, and you're there. When you're on a site that you like, click the "Tag" icon, type in some tags, or click on some of the suggested tags, and add it to your list.
  4. When you get back home (or to your office) and your computer, you may want to add all your existing bookmarks to del.icio.us.  After logging in with your username and password:
    • First, click on "settings" next to your username.
    • Under settings, select "Import/upload" under "Bookmarks."
    • Follow the directions - there are two steps. Be sure to read both the steps all the way through before starting.
  5. Once you've imported your bookmarks, you can modify your imported tags.
    • All the links you've imported have the tag "imported" attached to them. Click "edit" next to one of your "imported" links, and add the tags you want. Remove the "Imported" tag. Un-Check the box marked "Do Not Share." Now, the next time you select "Imported," only those links that you haven't changed yet will appear. By unchecking the "Do Not Share" box, you can see your links from elsewhere, and so can other people.

Things To Do

  1. Once you've learned other people's del.icio.us IDs, try typing them into your browser or linking to them.  You can even use the for:username tags to send them sites you think they'd find useful.  Try this with the person sitting beside you!
  2. Add some friends to your network (hint: you have a friend in "thurs3", so no excuses!) so they are saved as permanent contacts.  Then browse your network page to check up on what Internet resources your contacts are saving.  The Thursday@3 delicious ID is http://delicious.com/thurs3/.  Try adding it to your network to keep up on new stuff and use the for:thurs3 tag to send us interesting stuff of your own.
  3. Search delicious for things of interest to you - you might find some interesting sites that would not have come up anywhere near the top of a normal search engine site.
  4.  If you have a blog, add a link to your del.icio.us list in your Blogroll.  If you don't have a blog and would like one, come to the thurs@3@addlestone sessions on October 9 and 23!
